Real-time collaboration solutions are making their way into New Zealand at a yearly growing rate of 20%.
Beca, Massey University and Gen-I are three New Zealand organizations that have implemented with great success remote conferencing technologies and have discovered its benefits. They recently talked to Ulrika Hedquist from ComputerWorld about their experience with videoconferencing.
For Beca, an engineering consultancy company, video conferencing is indispensible for it is an organization with staff in different places in the world that is used to work in virtual environments. Remote conferencing tools increase productivity because they allow the staff to work from anywhere and still be connected to the group, even when they’re working from home.
Another issue important for Beca is environmental sustainability. Videoconferencing allowed the company to cut significantly on travel which reduced their carbon footprint by 58 tons per month.
The video conferencing system is paying itself on the cuts made with travel expenses. According to Beca Group CIO Robin Johansen, “based on travel costs alone it paid back very quickly”.
For Massey University, web conferencing was the solution found to “provide an interactive environment for teaching and learning purposes,” said Mark Brown, director of teaching, learning and distance education office at the assistant vice chancellor at the university.
With 17,000 distant students, Massey University is now able to provide them remote lessons and interactive materials leaving behind books, internet forums and Moodle activities.
Massey University teachers are now also able to provide their students with online tutorials, which are very useful for students who miss a lesson, and they’re also offering webinars to staff and students alike.
For Gen-I, an ICT solutions company, video conferencing was the solution found to cut on the company’s travel expenses.
“For us the business case was front-loaded, so the benefits were realized day one when we cut our travel budget,” stated the head of customer engagement solutions at Gen-i David Crowne.
According to the company the video conferencing system allowed them to save $580,000 on travel expenses during the first three months. But there were other benefits: it increases productivity, it speeds up decision making and it improves work/life balance.
